IMPACT: The Project Team

Geo Group, Czech Republic

The GEO Group Company has been established in 1991 as a specialized organization covering a broad spectrum of activities in applied geology and environmental protection in particular. The GEO Co. in the course of 1993 and 1994 became a firm able to solve a large variety of projects in the field of environmental protection including legislative and financial guarantees. Multidisciplinary projects are executed by company teams composed of various experts and in cooperation with other specialized institutions and individual experts. In addition to skilled experts, the company is well equipped with modern computer hardware and software, and with drilling and other gear for exploration, monitoring, measurements and employment of remedial technologies.

The business strategy is oriented towards the client demands in order to solve often a very complex and heterogeneous ecological projects with maximum efficacy, top quality and at reasonable cost. The execution of individual projects is preceded by analysis of all necessary parameters to design and apply the most efficient methods to fulfill the project objectives. Since its establishment, the GEO Group Company successfully executed more than 300 large ecological projects, about 40 ecological audits and risk assessments for the Czech Administration, various local and foreign clients. Currently, the company carries out remedial operations at about 30 localities in the Czech Republic (remedies of waters, soils and soil gases).

The GEO Group Company became a respected firm operating in the field of environmental protection, hydrogeology, ecological audits, risk assessments, water, soils and waste dump remedies with relevant references and providing qualified services to the clients. Among the principal activities of the company are not only the whole spectrum of exploration and recovery tasks concerning ecological burden elimination but also detection and protection of water resources and production of water administration information systems. Ecological projects financed by the European Union or other foreign bodies are an important part of the services provided by the company. The GEO Group Company occupies one of the top places in the market in the areas of geology and ecology. In 1997 the company obtained the ISO 9001 quality certificate.

The company also cooperates for the long time with the Ministry of Environment (as the Supervision team), Ministry of Agriculture and the State Property Fund in the field of water management and environmental protection. The company is also involved in projects financed by the PHARE program, PHARE CREDO program, 5th and 6th Framework Programme of EC.

INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS - the other running International Projects:

IRON CURTAIN - a research project supported by the European Commission under the Fifth Framework Programme and contributing to the implementation of the Key Action "Quality of life and management of living resources" , to the sub-priority "Sustainable agriculture, fisheries and forestry and integrated development of rural areas including mountain areas". It especially addresses key area 5.5 "New tools and models for the integrated and sustainable development of rural and other relevant areas". Contract No: QLRT-CT-2001-01401. Coordination: University of Leoben, Division of Oekosystem Analysis, Austria.

The overall goal of the project is to develop a methodology based on the manifold experience of the project partners leading to standardized tools and procedures for integrated resource evaluation, analysis and management following the principles of sustainable development. This will be tested and scaled in several case studies along an European north/south traverse. A generic model will be deduced to be successfully transferred and used in other relevant former iron curtain regions. Relevant users are represented mainly in institutions for regional and EU agricultural policy making, regional planning and resource (environmental) management.

TRANSCAT (Integrated Transboundary Management of Transboundary catchments); a research project supported by the European Commission under the Fifth Framework Programme and contributing to the implementation of the Key Action "Sustainable Management and Quality of Water" Contract nº EVK1-CT-2002-00124., co-ordinated by ISQ Portugal.

The main goal of the project is to create an operational and integrated comprehensive Decision Support System (DSS) for optimal water management of catchments in borderland regions, in context of the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive.

The DSS to be developed will focus mainly on pollution, flooding and water use issues.

Another objective of the project is the establishment of an European platform for initiating and promoting international co-operation and networking that will allow a more detailed insight to transboundary water/environment and related socio/economic problems. This will be achieved by connecting TRANSCAT with pre-existing EU Research of the FP5, in the perspective of the forthcoming FP6 and, connecting TRANSCAT with EU institutions involved in the process of implementing the WFD, with specific reference to the problems of pre-accession countries.

TRANSCAT sub-objectives:

  • Identification of relevant existing and potential conflicts in transboundary water systems.
  • Analysis of the existing legal and institutional framework related to transboundary water resources problems.
  • Identification of new concepts and proposals for evolution trends within EU framework.

A selection of reference (pilot) areas across Europe has been made to be able to provide a good contrast in transboundary area typology:

  • Guadiana river ( Spain/Portugal border)
  • Bela river ( Czech republic/Poland border)
  • Pasvik river (Norway/Russia border)
  • Nestos river ( Greece/Russia border)
  • Šumava catchment (Germany/Czech republic border)
