H-EURAqua, Hungary


H-EURAqua Water-Environmental Consulting Engineering, Organising, Developing and Trading Ltd., Szentendre, Hungary has been established in 1999 as a professional successor of CH2M HILL Hungary Engineering Ltd. Staff members and experts on retainer of H-EURAqua Ltd. are engineers and scientists with very broad experience in water-environmental disciplines.

The main activities of the company are in the field of flood management, flood plain and flood risk analysis and mapping with special regard to the failure probability of the defences of the protected flood basins. H-EURAqua Ltd. also have substantial experience in the field of flood emergency response planning and flood management studies

Scope of work of H-EURAqua Ltd. also includes integrated catchment management planning, regional emergency response plans in case of accidental water pollution, water quality management in river basins, Feasibility Studies for Pollution Reduction (incl. communal, industrial, agricultural and also the restoration of wetlands) in the frame of Danube River Pollution Reduction Program financed by GEF via IBRD.

H-EURAqua Ltd. is working on the following ongoing projects:

  • Harmonisation of the working programme of the Penta-lateral Tisza River Basin Forum on Flood Control with the provisions of the Water Framework Directive - Subcontractor to KEVITERV Ltd., Szolnok, Client: Ministry of Environment and Water, Budapest
  • IMPACT Project WP6 Monitoring & Case Studies; Tasks D.6.5-D.6.7 - Client: European Commission, Research Directorate General, Brussels, ongoing

    During its relatively short existence and operation, H-EURAqua Ltd. has delivered several important decision preparing studies, emergency management plans and catchment management plans with an integrated approach, taking into consideration the sustainability of those projects.

Just before the foundation of the H-EURAqua Ltd. the founder Mr. Tóth, as independent consultant has delivered the following projects:

  • Institutional and Legal Frames within the Rehabilitation and Development of Hungarian Flood Control System - World Bank Project, subcontractor of Gyulavari BT, assigned by VITUKI Consult Plc and Halcrow Water, Budapest, 1999
  • PHARE Project Proposal for the Development of the Flood Mitigation of Szolnok Region, Central Tisa Valley DWA, Szolnok, 1999 the PHARE support had been awarded to the project and implementation of the construction work could started last year).

Sándor Tóth

Mr. Tóth is a senior engineer. He has MSc degree in civil engineering from the Budapest University of Technology and 30 years experience in the water and environmental field. He has been responsible for projects involving long term flood protection programs, flood emergency response planning and maintenance activities, preparation of relevant legislation as well as research and development activities for various governmental and consultancy organizations. Mr. Tóth is internationally recognized as an authority on the subject of flood defence, flood plain management, risk assessment, and catchment flood management.

He also has substantial project experience as project manager and leading designer in water pollution emergency response planning, integrated river basin management planning, river basin pollution reduction programs and environmental auditing of various industrial sites, as well as in preparation and management of big domestic and international projects financed by various IFI-s.

Role in the project: responsible for the whole output of case study data collection and management in Hungary

László Nagy M.Sc. C.E

Eur Ing László Nagy M.Sc. C.E. has a master degree in geotechnical engineering from the Budapest University of Technology and 21 years experience in civil and geotechnical engineering. He has been responsible for projects involving geotechnical surveying of different water management structures including dams and flood dikes. He was responsible designer in a number of projects dealing with earth dam investigation, cross section planning and stability analysis, construction of embankments on peaty soils, examination of the failure mechanism of flood embankments.

He directed the development of the rules and procedures of soil mechanical site investigations in the Hungarian State Water Services, the development of new methods in the flood embankment investigation including the survey of subsoil stratification and dike tomography by using horizontal geoelectric probing, the programme for the supervision of the subsoil conditions and the structure of the earth dikes. He is also responsible for experting earth dike failures, and other special problems along the Hungarian flood dikes. He is involved into development programme of risk assessment and mapping.

Role in the project: responsible for the development of database format, case study data collection, evaluation and interpretation as well as for the analysis of the collected data in Hungary
